Streetcar has common links in history on St Charles Avenue

Streetcar History in New Orleans

The St Charles Avenue Streetcar, continuously operating in New Orleans since 1835, is the oldest working streetcar line in the world. Hop aboard and clickety-clack in historical style to the French Quarter, the setting for Vieux Carré, a semi-autobiographical Tennessee Williams play. Lauded as one of America’s best playwrights, he regarded New Orleans as his spiritual town.

A Streetcar Named Desire, an acclaimed Broadway play by Tennessee Williams, was based on the NOLA streetcar route on Desire Street. It ran through the Bywater District and back on Canal Street.

While the Desire line has been gone a long time, you can visit and participate in the upcoming Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival in 2020.

When you visit New Orleans, be sure to take this ride and enjoy a bit of history.
