When I moved to a Phoenix suburb in the Valley of the Sun, I was thrilled to witness an abundance of wildlife right in my own backyard–the Sonoran Desert. I have collected some fascinating creatures from this region for this coloring book.
The Sonoran Desert is a vast area in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. This desert is approximately 100,000 square miles and is known for its exceptional natural features and variety of wildlife that sets it apart from other regions. The desert is a hot and dry climate, with temperatures often more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit during summer.
The Sonoran Desert is home to numerous plant and animal species. The Gila Monster, a venomous lizard; the Desert Tortoise, a slow-moving reptile; and the Roadrunner, a quick bird popularized by cartoons, are some of the most well-known animals of this desert. Other notable species include the Coyote, the Bobcat, and the Javelina, which is a type of wild pig.
In addition to these animals, the Sonoran Desert is home to several unique plants, such as the Saguaro Cactus, which can grow up to 70 feet tall and live for more than 150 years. Common plants include the Joshua Tree and Cholla Cactus, as seen in this coloring book.
