S’edav Va’aki Museum: Preserving Phoenix’s Native History

S’edav Va’aki Museum in Phoenix preserves the history of the ancient Hohokam people, ancestors of today’s O’odham communities.

The museum, once called Pueblo Grande Museum, centers around a 1,500-year-old platform mound. This mound likely served as a place for ceremonies, leadership, and community gatherings.

Visitors can walk outdoor trails with reconstructed pithouses, a traditional ki village, and signs of the canal system that helped people farm in the desert.

In 2024, the museum completed its first major renovation in 50 years. The updates added new exhibit spaces, a redesigned lobby, and rotating galleries that focus on Indigenous voices and traditions.

Today, the museum does more than protect history. It gives visitors a clearer look at Native culture, art, storytelling, and desert life in Phoenix.
